Summer is moving by so quickly! SCORA had an awesome season so far, with lots of novices on the start lines for our Iron Season. We showcased their paddling talents in the first 4 races and added a dance contest at the Kai Elua hosted Iron Championship race at the end of June. SYTYCD season 5 finalist Kupono Aweau and Survivor 22 contestant Julie Wolfe and Kai Elua paddler Margot Darby were the panel of judges for that portion of the days entertainment. A tip to the novii: keep your day jobs! It was good fun though, and kudos to the guys and gals who strutted their stuff on stage for that talent show! Overall winners of the Iron Season Perpetual trophy, hosted by Kai Elua went to—guess! Yep, Lanakila! And they are still running strong in the sprint season which is when we can see the fast paced paddling action of our associations’ keiki programs! My favorite part is watching the keiki coaches trying to herd the 12 and unders to the canoes when there is so much sand and water to be played in and with - and then the in-between races when sCORA score Photos by Chris Silvester a lot of the kids are on SUP’s or paddling around the outside of the course on OC1s - good stuff to see the next generation coming along in big numbers. We just finished up the Kahakai 9-man sprint relay, another successful year of this particular trace format, watching changes and sprinting to a flag-turn then changes again. It’s a great chance to see how the top teams are doing it, and then again, it's good to know that not everyone gets every change – right? Crews who sprinted ahead after the turn were met with slow changes and the order of the next leg was suddenly different - I like calling that race makes my day. We are, at time of print, headed to Santa Barbara for the Sprint Championships. This race also showcases the keiki’s and novices, and then becomes a right of passage ritual event for novices moving onto the “open” team roster. Never a dull moment of costuming and antics as they “graduate” their status. Then it’s a little bit of sprint racing- right? ‘cuz that’s why we’re here, we also crown the winningest Sprint club of the day - the club who races in the most divisions and places tally points towards a perpetual trophy, and then look out State Street - all the paddler are looking for fine food, libation and dancing!
