Photos by Chris Silvester >>>another cheering booze-cruise back to Newport cAtALiNA croSSing the Southern california Outrigger Racing Association closed out its 2013 Lanakila UL women- First over the line on Saturday- winners of the Mayors Cup season with it's annual two-day catalina crossing event. On Saturday 62 crews, women and co-ed teams, raced from newport to Avalon. the start line on both days was picture perfect. When a race of this size leaves the beach the first and foremost thing on all race organizers' minds is safety. So many factors come into play when you involve motorized vessels with canoes; the wake, the prop, we pulled off a medic-free crossing. Vessel assist, now that’s a different story- nothing like having a chase boat break down just outside the harbor; nevertheless, ScORA was on top of all such fail- ures and was able to help bring everyone over. the results are posted at www. catalincrossing.org. We welcomed visiting paddlers from canada, miami, new York, Washington and northern california. Our most Inspirational team was 1st place crew of the nAc women 19’s, the only 19’s crew in the race this year. Marina del Rey women UL We lit up the island after all the canoes were 'parked' in the moorings set up by the Billy and Bud, assisted by valet parking attendant Rob Pelkey. Another 20-plus canoes were stacked on the beach at the direction of Ross with the aid of the Outrigger team 'cali' men hoisting the canoes up and over the 6-foot break wall. the island party was blessed by the talents of the Kalama Brothers who also play at our awards ceremony and then again on the Wahine express that night back to newport. the Kalama Brothers also played for us at the metropole Arcade where more food and drinks was served up to the racers. We honored tom Johnson who passed away this year. tom was a key figure in the beginnings of outrigger racing in california. We also honored Jojo toeppner as our Grand marshall for her unending passion for outrigger racing.
