HcrA States the Garden Island canoe Racing Association hosted the Hawaiian canoe Racing Association State championships on Kauai. Welcoming paddlers and State championships spectators to Hanalei Bay was a double rainbow, an omen of what lay ahead… the turn flags mirrored the rainbow's colors and confused some steers- men. Or was it the waterfall cascading down mount Wai'ale'ale? In spite of paradise's distractions, like turtles in the bay or the Brown Booby catching small fry panicked by the churning of paddles, the rest of the day was all about hanging out at the beach, Keaukaha Boys 12: Kekoa Kapahu, Kamaha'o Kawelu, Ka'i Kawelu, Solomon Keahilihau-Kuamoo, Mihi Mokiao and Pono Mortensen take first place. enjoying the company of friends, refueling at the food booths, shopping for paddling accessories and waiting for your turn to sprint in a koa canoe. Men 65-plus winners Keauhou Canoe Club with Bob Bruce, James Budde, Lorrin Ching, Richard Everett, Gil Niday and Mel Pauole. forty-one races later Hawaiian canoe club, who had entered 36 events, accumulated 351 points, enough to take back the State championship title they lost last year. Hawaiian won 14 medals, nine of which were gold. Hui nalu earned 327 points, taking second in the AAAA Division, and Kailua canoe club took third with 323 points. more Division Results: AAA Division was won by Keahiakahoe (169) with Keaukaha canoe club (162) second and Kihei canoe club (153) First into the half-mile women's Freshmen turn, Waikiki Beach Boys' Alanna Bender, Chelsea Bizik, Amber Fischer, Kimberly Ivey, Eko Lapp, and Lindsey Shank would hold their lead to the finish.
