Dragon Boats. more popular on the east coast and gaining a foothold on the West coast, the ancient chinese boat race has been gaining world-wide recognition over the last 30 years. this summer, the biannual national dragon boat competition was held in the Hungarian city of Szeged with competitors from 29 countries. these colorfully painted boats with an ornate gold dragon head on the bow and tail on the stern seats ten-pairs of paddlers on benches, with a drummer seated in the front and a steersman standing in the back. the excitement mounts as the boats gently glide to the starting line and line up into the starting cup. On your mark, GO! the starting cup releases the boats with a splash, and they are off amid the sounds of drumming and yelling, and the spray of water coming off the paddles. With nearly 200 USA athletes, the backbone and spearhead of the US team came from Philadelphia and was joined by team mates from florida, the midwest, california and Hawaii. team USA brought home many medals from each category, with the elite premier team finishing 3rd overall.
