A Kailua Bay
Challenge
It wasn't too small, it wasn't too big at the 22nd Annual Kailua
Bay Ironman Challenge. Kailua Canoe Club holds the annual fundraising event to help pay for maintenance and repair of the club's
canoes. The race is always held the day before the women's Dad
Center Race. There were two divisions of racers at the 'men's only'
event - a short 9.5 mile or a long 13.5 mile course.
The race started on Kailua Beach. Paddlers had to first run down
to their canoes and jump in, then paddle out through the reef and
around 'Bird Rock'. From 'Bird', the course ran across the bay, with
wind and waves on the canoes' ama to the 'Mokes'. From Moku
Manu, it was a half-mile paddle out into ocean swells, around a
buoy, and the payoff, a downwind run back to Kailua Beach for the
short course. For long course crews, an extra 4-mile paddle down to
'Castles' (near where President Obama vacations while on Oahu),
then back to the finish at Kailua CC's hale (site).
There were 36 crews who came out to race. Winning the short
course was Kailua 50's in a time of 1:19:01. Close behind them were
Kailua 40's, 1:19:29 and Lanikai 50's, 1:20:37. Kailua also won the
Novice Division, 1:22:10 and Lanikai's Junior Crew finished in the
middle of the pack with 1:29:12.
In the long course division, it was Hui Nalu in an Unlimited
Canoe that finished first overall with 1:35:20. Second overall and
first in a 'Spec.' Boat was Lanikai, 1:38:36, followed by Kailua
(1:39:14) and another Lanikai crew (1:40:31).
There were six crews of age 65-plus racing. Keahiakahoe won
that division placing 14th overall out of 25 crews.
At the awards, Race Director Hank Leandro gave away plenty of
prizes. Paddlers also got a tee shirt and all the lunch they could eat.
