Aloha Kakou,
On behalf of the 2017 Hawaiian Airlines Moloka'i Hoe Committee, we would like to welcome you to the
beautiful Hawaiian Islands. We hope that your stay in the islands is memorable in every way imaginable.
Furthermore, we wish each and every crew, paddler, club and supporter our fondest Aloha and Mahalo while
you are here.
For our kama'aina, we welcome you back once again to this event. All of you combined are what makes our
event so successful and the most prestigious canoe race in the world. We look forward to another successful
event because of your continued support and cooperation!!
For those that will not be able to join us for the festivities, we encourage you to watch live TV coverage
(Spectrum OC16) as well as live computer internet streaming on our home page beginning at 8:00am (www.
molokaihoe.com).
Please join us at the event Finish Line. There will be a huge event tent with TV monitors available for
everyone to enjoy the live action of the crews on the water. Be the first to
greet the crews as they come across the finish line. Hawaiian Airlines also
has a very nice line-up of entertainment for all to enjoy.

On October 12, 1952 , three Koa
5th place, Red Bull Wa'a, Big Island - 5:12:07

6th place, Hui Nalu, Oahu - 5:14:46

outrigger canoes launch through the surf at
Kawakiu Bay on Molokai's west side. Powered
by six paddlers, each of the canoes was bound for
Oahu across 38+ miles of open ocean in the Ka'iwi
Channel. Eight hours and 55 minutes later, the
Molokai canoe, Kukui O Lanikaula landed on the
beach at Waikiki in front of the Moana Hotel. Thus
began the world's most prestigious outrigger canoe
race, the Molokai Hoe.

The Molokai Hoe has become one of the longest running annual team sporting events in Hawaii, second
only to football. The Moloka'i Hoe perpetuates one of Hawaii's and Polynesia's most important and historic
cultural traditions while honoring outrigger canoe paddlers around the world. The Molokai Hoe tests the
limits of physical and mental strength and endurance, courage, determination, and teamwork; and paddlers
must also battle nature's most extreme elements.
