Sand Point on Lake Washington
Kikaha O Ke Kai and Sand Point (SPOCC) Outrigger Canoe Clubs
- 9 Man Outrigger Canoe Challenge

On August 19, 2017, Kikaha O Ke Kai and SPOCC
Outrigger Canoe Clubs hosted their annual long
distance canoe race at Sand Point on Seattle's Lake
Washington. This included 3 races: 26-mile water
change out, beach 20-mile beach-change out, and an
18-mile iron where clubs from Canada, Oregon and
Washington competed.
There are many beautiful canoe races in the Pacific
Northwest, and this is one of the best where paddlers

are lucky to live and paddle in the land of abundant lakes, rivers, and the absolutely massive Puget
Sound and where majestic Bald Eagles, Great Blue
Herons, Harbor Seals and California Sea Lions regularly pass on by. Seattle is not known for its warm
weather, however this year's race was perfect with
warm and great conditions for facilitating fast times
- mild wind, sunny and flat conditions.

The first course is a stunningly beautiful 26-mile

loop around Mercer Island. It goes under 3 bridges
(405 floating bridge, the I90 floating bridge and the
I90 non-floating bridge), passes close to Seaward Park
(everyone has got to love that jewel of Seattle) and
hundreds of multimillion-dollar homes with finely
manicured landscape.

The second course is a 20-mile beach-change out
giving racers an opportunity to participate, compete
and race without the complication and logistics of
doing water-changes. It's a relay race experience for
all paddlers including but not limited to the young,
old, novice, advanced and even the handicapped. This
proves to be the most exciting race for fans and spectators.
The final course is an 18-mile Iron race for the long
distance paddlers.
Here are the race results:

26-mile change out (total of 13 crews) - 1st place Open
Men unlimited SPOCC, 3:11:26; 1st place Coed unlimited "Freelance" (Lance Mamiya's), 3:35:34; 1st place
Open Women SPOCC, 4:03:14.

20-mile beach (5 crews, all coed) - 1st place
"Northwest Total Eclipse", 2:46:05.
18-mile (total of 4 crews, all coed) - 1st place Masters
Coed unlimited "Doug's Crew" (Doug Miyata),
2:35:49.

The races all started from the beach with the steersperson having to run to the canoe from a short distance
away. After the start, and despite having been slowed
from a few canoe collisions, the race was well
underway and everyone finished with race tales to
discuss.

One notable crew was the Kikaha Men's Kupuna
9-man change out team, affectionately known as "9-Ele
Makule" (Hawaiian for 9 old men). Paul Aio leads
this group of inspired, athletic Kupuna men. In their
pre-race meeting they recognized the person who they
were paddling for and in many cases it was someone
who had passed away. These men have consistently
raced together and have successfully combined talents
and experience as they reside across Washington and
Oregon. They are an inspiration with wisdom and
experience to many of the younger paddlers.
The day ended in the splendor of the Pacific Northwest
in amazing fresh air and a fun paddling atmosphere
with generous raffle prizes, awesome food and friendly
competition with something for every paddler from the
novice to the world-class paddler with crews gearing
up for the Catalina Crossing, Queen Lili'uokalani, and
Moloka'i Hoe races.
