Fung, MD, PhD is the Chairman of the Department of General Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. With over 25 years of involvement in kidney, liver, pancreas, islet, and intestinal transplantation, he is also an accomplished immunologist. Dr. Fung received his BA from Johns Hopkins University, followed by a PhD in Immunology and MD from the University of Chicago. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Rochester, and a transplant surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Starzl. In 1989, he joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, and held the tenured position as the inaugural Thomas E. Starzl Professor in Surgery. He is currently Professor of Surgery at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western University. Dr. Fung served as President of the International Liver Transplantation Society from 1997-1999. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief for Liver Transplantation. His principal research interests are in transplantation immunology, immunosuppressive therapies, and liver related immunology. Goals and Objectives: n Review clinical and animal transplant models of liverrelated tolerance. n Examine possible mechanisms to explain tolerance induced by the liver. n Propose potential clinical scenarios for application of liver tolerance. The Thomas E. Starzl Transplant Surgery State-of-the-Art Lecture recognizes the pioneering work that Dr. Thomas E. Starzl and colleagues have done to elevate liver transplantation from an experimental procedure to one that saves thousands of lives annually. To ensure that future transplant scientists have a distinct platform to provide their valuable insights at The Liver Meeting®, a restricted fund has been established to support this lecture in perpetuity. AASLD gratefully acknowledges the following individuals and organizations that have generously contributed to this fund: Adel Bozorgzadeh, MD Pradip Chakrabarti, MD Chao-Long Chen, MD David K. C. Lee, MD, was educated at Amherst College, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his house staff training at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and Kings College Hospital, London. Dr. Lee has been at UT Southwestern as Professor of Internal Medicine since 1990 and has held the Meredith Mosle Chair in Liver Diseases since 2003. He leads a large clinical trials group at UT Southwestern performing pharmaceutical studies in hepatitis B and C as well as NIH-sponsored research (the HALT-C trial). He was the founding principal investigator for the Acute Liver Failure Study Group (ALFSG) that has been funded by NIDDK, and based at UT Southwestern since 1998. Goals and Objectives: n Recognize the signs and symptoms of acute liver failure (ALF). n Discuss the varying etiologies of acute liver failure and their differing clinical presentations. n Be able to plan a workup and considerations for initial treatment and for transplantation. n Understand issues surrounding determination of prognosis and outcomes in ALF. The Leon Schiff State-of-the-Art Lecture honors Dr. Schiff and recognizes the work he did to elevate the study and practice of hepatology to the discipline it is today. The restricted fund supporting this lecture ensures that future hepatologists will have a distinct platform from which to provide their valuable insights at The Liver Meeting®.
