Evans, PhD, is an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and a professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He is known for his discoveries and characterization of nuclear hormone receptors, the establishment of the nuclear receptor super family and the elucidation of their universal mechanism of action, and a process that governs how lipophilic hormones and drugs regulate diverse developmental and metabolic pathways in animals and humans. Dr. Evans obtained his BA and PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine in 1970 and 1974 respectively. After working on myeloid leukemia viruses, he became a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. James Darnell at the Rockefeller University in New York studying the transcriptional regulation of human adenovirus, leading to the identification of the first eukaryotic promoter for messenger RNA. In 1977, he joined the faculty of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies where he is now a professor in the Gene Expression Laboratory and March of Dimes Chair in Molecular and Developmental Biology. He holds adjunct professorships at the University of California, San Diego in the Departments of Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Neuroscience. Goal and Objective: n Describe how manipulation of genetic circuits controlled by nuclear receptors can alter metabolism leading to new ways to control obesity and enhance physical performance. The Hyman J. Zimmerman Hepatotoxicity State-of-the-Art Lecture recognizes Dr. Zimmerman’s work in toxic liver injury. Shulman, MD, PhD Dr. Shulman is currently Professor of Internal Medicine and Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale University School of Medicine as well as an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is also Associate Director of the Yale Diabetes-Endocrinology Research Center and Associate Director of the Yale Medical Scientist Training Program. Dr. Shulman completed his undergraduate studies in biophysics at the University of Michigan, and he received his MD and PhD degrees from Wayne State University. Following internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center, he did an endocrinology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and additional postdoctoral work in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale before joining the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He was subsequently recruited back to Yale and has remained there ever since. Dr. Shulman has pioneered the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to non-invasively examine hepatic fat and carbohydrate metabolism in humans. His work has been recognized with numerous honors and awards including the Outstanding Investigator Award from the American Federation for Clinical Research (AFCR), the Diabetes Care Research Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Novartis Award in Diabetes, the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award and the Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and most recently the Korsmeyer Award from the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Dr. Shulman has been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Goals and Objectives: n Understand the role of fatty liver disease in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. n Understand the role of insulin resistance in skeletal muscle in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. The Hans Popper Basic Science State-of-the-Art Lecture recognizes Hans Popper, the founder of AASLD, his role in the establishment of the AASLD journal Hepatology, and his promotion of the intellectual spirit of the Association.
