Barrat, MD 9:10 – 9:40 pm Wrap-up and Discussion Sterile inflammation is an important component of many liver diseases ranging from acetaminophen toxicity, to alcoholic hepatitis, and NASH. Recent significant advances have been made in understanding signals from dying cells which initiate the sterile inflammatory response and the downstream molecular pathways. Four brief presentations will focus on generating a discussion among attendees and invited experts to clarify the impact of these findings on liver diseases. Special attention will be devoted to novel therapeutic opportunities presented by these new findings. Goals and Objectives: n Understand the current knowledge on the signals from dying hepatocytes which activate sterile inflammation (including DNA from apoptotic cells and HMGB1 proteins). n MONdAy, NOveMbeR 3 • 7:00 – 10:00 pM FSG – 2: ANGIOGeNeSIS ANd pORtAl hypeRteNSION MOdeRAtORS: Vijay Shah, MD and Manuel Morales-Ruiz, PhD Complications of portal hypertension account for the majority of morbidity and mortality that occurs due to cirrhosis. While the vasoregulatory events that lead to portal hypertension are being elucidated, it is becoming clear that angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels, also plays a central role in portal hypertension. This symposium will explore the mechanisms and clinical relevance of angiogenesis in portal hypertension. Goals and Objectives: n Understand signaling mechanisms that mediate angiogenesis. n Understand the current knowledge on the molecular pathways required for sterile inflammation (including TOLL receptors and the inflammasome). Identify the tipping points in the sterile inflammation pathways which are targets for therapy. n Understand how angiogenesis is associated with portal hypertension in vascular beds relevant to portal hypertension.
