It constitutes the main cause for liver transplantation and mortality in other controllable diseases including human immunodeficiency disorder. Awareness and development of programs for detection, prevention, and treatment will be the main objective of this session. Particular attention will be paid to: n Mortality associated with alcoholic hepatitis, alcoholic cirrhosis, and alcoholic fatty liver. n Contributions of both the parenchymal and nonparenchymal cells within the liver to the initiation and progression of alcohol-induced injury, as well as the roles of the innate and adaptive immune systems. n The discussion of abstinence from alcohol and reduction in the damage to the liver caused by alcohol. n Liver transplantation for patients with life threatening alcoholic liver disease. See page 24 for more details. Anania, MD Intercellular communication between heterotypic populations of liver cells is a burgeoning area of investigation in liver research. This mini-symposium will be a forum to discuss cell-cell crosstalk between sinusoidal and endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells and hepatocytes, and the role intercellular communications plays in fibrosis, steatohepatitis, and other forms of liver injury. McCullough, MD This session will provide an update into both the basic science/pathophysiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its clinical aspects, including treatment. See page 25 for more details. The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rising in the United States and is projected to continue over the next decade. Significant limitations exist with regard to how the diagnosis of HCC is currently established given the limitations of imaging and the pathologic examination. Limitations also exist with the current classification of HCC, which is mainly done by pathological examination, and how HCC clinical behavior is currently assessed, which is done by tumor burden and hepatic function. The advent of the human genome has led to the identification of molecular tools that may change our way of diagnosing, classifying, and predicting the behavior of HCC. This symposium will offer the current status of molecular techniques in HCC. See page 32 for more details.
