MOdeRAtOR: Gregory J. Gores, MD The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rising in the United States and is projected to continue over the next decade. Significant limitations exist with regards to how the diagnosis of HCC is currently established, given the limitations of imaging and the pathologic examination. Limitations also exist with the current classification of HCC, which is mainly done by pathological examination, and how HCC clinical behavior is currently assessed, which is done by tumor burden and hepatic function. The advent of the human genome has led to the identification of molecular tools that may change our way of diagnosing, classifying, and predicting the behavior of HCC. This symposium will offer the current status of molecular techniques in HCC.
