The American Public on Health Care-The Missing Perspective - (Page 24) What We Did Beginning in the summer of 2007, the Council for Excellence in Government, with support from the Accenture Institute for Public Service Value and with guidance from the Institute of Medicine, reached out to understand the public perspective on health care concerns and priorities. • We organized town hall meetings in Miami, Detroit, and San Francisco to hear real-life stories of the American people’s interactions—both positive and negative—with the health care system. These town halls featured panels of local subject matter leaders to provide expertise and help respond to the audience—our true “stars of the show.” each town hall location, we partnered with local broadcast and print media to invite the public to participate and to give visibility to their perspective. Gallup Organization conducted focus groups, followed by local surveys in each of the town hall cities to provide quantitative context to the town hall discussions. Institute of Medicine co-hosted the town hall meetings and helped design the survey research and inform the development of the final report. • The Gallup Organization conducted a capstone national survey, which added depth to the themes uncovered through the town hall meetings and local surveys. Accenture Institute for Public Service Value conducted a study on international comparisons of consumer health information. This research was invaluable, and appears throughout the report. This report is the product of those collaborative efforts. It includes stories and statistics, anecdotes and analysis, and promising practices in the health care arena here in the U.S. and in other countries. • The Our goal is to bring the voices of the public—the missing perspective—into the debate about health care reform as we elect a new president and welcome new leaders at all levels of government across the country. Survey Research Gallup conducted a nationwide survey among 1,000 adults in June 2008. The survey was conducted by telephone and data were weighted to reflect U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3.1% for the overall sample, and is larger for subgroups. Prior to each of the town hall meetings Gallup also conducted surveys in the three town hall host cities. Each of these surveys was conducted by telephone and data were weighted to reflect the U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The margin of sampling error is +/4.9% for the overall sample, and larger for subgroups. • In • The • The This report is the product of those collaborative efforts.
