University and one of the largest university
arts complexes in the nation. In addition
to a priceless collection of art, the Ringling
campus in Sarasota includes a rose garden,
the Historic Asolo Theater and a fascinating
Circus Museum, a nod to circus impresario
John Ringling, who bequeathed his museum
and estate-including his mansion on
Sarasota Bay-to the state of Florida.
Past Lives
In addition to their artistic contributions
people past and present give Central Florida
a unique cultural history.
Before leaving Sarasota, check out Historic
Spanish Point, where artifacts date back
thousands of years and pioneer buildings recall
the days of frontier Florida. Encompassing both
cultural and archaeological history, the 30-acre
site sits on Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey.
Heading north to the Bradenton area,

history lives on in Cortez, one of the last
remaining fishing villages on Florida's Gulf
Coast, an identity that precedes the modern
world and goes back to Native Americans
and the Spanish. The Cortez Cultural Center
collects, displays and preserves photographs,
furniture, clothing and other artifacts from
those who have lived here since the village's
founding in the 1880s.
Also in Bradenton, you can stroll through
the past in Manatee Village Historical Park,
a collection of restored buildings from
Manatee County's pioneer past, including
a courthouse, a one-room schoolhouse,
farmhouse, general store, boat shop, steam
engine and a Florida cowboy bunkhouse.
North of Bradenton, visitors will find the
Tampa Bay History Center, a Smithsonian
Institution Affiliate that includes three floors
of permanent and temporary exhibits
focusing on 12,000 years of Florida history.
Meanwhile, history is on display in the
form of murals and wall paintings in other
Central Florida towns, including Lake Placid,
where a huge mural illustrating Florida's
historic Cracker Trail splashes across the side
of a grocery store. Other mural towns in
Central Florida include DeLand, Lake Wales,
Melbourne and Brooksville, among others
