EXPERTS SPOTLIGHT With its high-tech infrastructure and easy accessibility, World Congresses are making Mexico their choice. In 2012 alone – the G-20 Summit of world financial leaders met in Los Cabos, the T-20 Summit of world tourism ministers gathered in Merida, the World Economic Forum on Latin America met in Puerto Vallarta, the T-20 World Tourism Organization congress chose Campeche; the International Canopy Conference met in Oaxaca and the inaugural Baja International Film Festival lit up Los Cabos. “Mexico has grown its specialized infrastructure very quickly,” says Patricia FariasBarlow, general director of the Puerto Vallarta International Convention Center. “In the past few years, Mexico has grown into a country that offers 67 state-of-the-art convention centers in all types of destinations and locations.” Farias-Barlow says add to that the professionalism and friendly demeanor as well as highly specialized professionals that know how to serve the needs of large events group, and Mexico is by far a leader in the meetings and incentives market. “The 2012 G-20 Summit in Los Cabos showed the world that large scale business meetings can be conducted in one of the most beautiful beach destinations in the world,” says Alex Vidal, director of strategy and marketing for Los Cabos Convention Center. “We couldn’t have had a better opening event.” The G-20 brought together 24 heads of state and government, eight leaders of international organizations and more than 7,000 attendees. The inaugural Baja International Film Festival came shortly after the G-20 drawing 7,000 people from the film industry, from celebrities and moviemakers, to film aficionados. “I was amazed at Los Cabos Convention Center,” enthuses Scott Cross, festival codirector. “It is one of the greenest in the world, with the world’s largest ‘living wall’.” “The beach, the beauty, the modern infrastructure, plus easy airline connectivity make Los Cabos the perfect setting for the festival,” adds Sean Cross, Scott’s brother and festival co-director. With Los Cabos as their preferred venue, the brothers are hoping to turn the Baja International Film Festival into a “world film influencer – another Cannes, perhaps?” says Sean. Puerto Vallarta also hosted back-to-back mega-events in 2012: the World Economic Forum on Latin America, which drew 900 world leaders and influencers, and the 2012 Tianguis Turistico (Mexico’s international travel trade show), which attracted 50 percent more buyers than the previous year, according to organizers. The ease of doing business adds magnetism to Mexico’s meetings. “Planners tell me all the time, ‘It’s so easy to do business here,’” says Fernando Cervantes, director of groups and conventions for the Cancun CVB. n A SAMPLING OF 2012 INTERNATIONAL CONGRESSES HELD IN MEXICO CANCUN: ALTA CCMA, 32th Congress of the International Society of Blood Transfusion, International Congress of Occupational Health.
