Spa & Wellness Experiences M exico's deeply-rooted traditions and holistic approach to wellness combine to attract groups from around the globe. In fact, the Global Wellness Summit took place Nov. 13 to 15 in Mexico City, where delegates from 41 countries were introduced to the indigenous Mexican experience of the Temazcal, an ancient steam bath that combines a detoxification treatment with a spiritual, healing ritual. This is simply the beginning of what the country has to offer groups in search of wellness. CENTRAL The Global Wellness Summit took place at the 189-room St. Regis Mexico City, known for its Remede Spa. Located on the hotel's 15th and 16th floors, the spa overlooks Paseo de la Reforma's main avenue, combining ancient and newage treatments with a modern Mexican design. When Spa Director Alejandro Ochoa joined the spa in 2011, she helped launch anti-aging and slimming treatments that feature LPG technology 24 SPA & WELLNESS Above: Now Sapphire Riviera Cancun and use the Cellu M6 Integral-one of only four in Mexico-to help sculpt and slim the figure. More traditional treatments include the signature Aztecan Regenerating Facial, which uses oxygen to help with the effects of high altitude and city travel. While the spa is an ideal way for small groups to unwind, the hotel's fitness services are equally beneficial to attendees wanting to participate in Pilates and yoga sessions. The concierge can also help arrange cultural activities and private tours of the historic Coyoacan or Xochimilco neighborhoods, for instance. The tradition of soaking in mineral springs or balnearios can be traced back to the Aztecs in the 16th century. San Miguel de Allende, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to several of these spots that became popularized again in the 1950s when artists and Mexican movie stars rediscovered them. Formal spas and baths have since been constructed and make the ideal spot for attendees looking to soak up the natural minerals that, as legend has it, have age-reversing effects. The Mayan Baths, situated atop a hill overlooking the Laja Valley, is available for large group and corporate events. Attendees can explore the crystal-lined tunnels in the underground baths, which were aligned to allow bathers to observe the sun as it set in the center of the tunnel leading out to the open-air baths on Dec. 21, the day of the winter solstice. Today, the tunnels are lined with more than 100 candles, making it easy for attendees to explore well into the night. An evening dinner is served buffet style so that attendees can come and go from the water as they please. The nearby, 67-room Rosewood San Miguel de Allende offers a similar wellness experience in the on-site Sense, A Rosewood Spa. Signature treatments at the spa combine Mexican healing traditions and indigenous ingredients. The Thermal Waters Wellness treatment, for instance, starts by visiting the area's natural thermal pools before being driven back to the spa for a full body exfoliation with organic sugar and wild lavender. Meeting planners can also organize yoga and Pilates classes for groups. www.mexicomeetings.com http://www.mexicomeetings.com
