Guided tours through the museum teach visitors about Dalí’s life and work. SOUTH FLORIDA MIAMI | The city’s starpower goes beyond celeb-spotting on South Beach: it also draws renowned artists from around the world to Art Basel Miami every December. It’s the sister event to Switzerland’s Art Basel, showcasing contemporary artworks by more than 2,000 artists from 250 of the world’s top art galleries. The event also features tours to Miami’s Design district and art collector’s forums. In 2009 the artist roster included Marilyn Minter, Georg Baselitz and David Hockney, along with works by Picasso and Warhol on display. A month earlier, November’s Miami Book Fair International hosts a similar event for the literary scene, combining readings by renowned authors and poets—including Joyce Carol Oates, Barbara Kingsolver and Wally Lamb—with a street fair and creative writing courses taught by experts in the eld. But though the arts are at their height in Miami toward the end of the year, the city o ers cultural experiences year-round. Museums like the Bass Museum on South Beach and the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami serve as the city’s arts pulse, with rotating exhibits showcasing arts both locally and across the globe. An example would be MOCA’s The Reach of Realism exhibit, which is focused on the exploration of realism in an age of digital manipulation and staged reality. FORT LAUDERDALE | A good place for clients to start exploring the city’s artsy o erings would be the Third Avenue Art District, where a handful of galleries and a scenic setting make for a picturesque afternoon of browsing. More masterpieces await at the Museum of Art, an o shoot of Nova Southeastern University that specializes in modern pieces by the likes of Tracey Emin. And at Cinema Paradiso, lm bu s can get their arthouse theater x with screenings of documentaries and independent and foreign lms. This is the site of the annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, where celebrities, lmmakers and fans alike congregate every November for screenings, parties and galas galore. OFFICIAL FLORIDA TRAVEL INDUSTRY GUIDE 2010 Another of the city’s showcases of up-and-coming artists is the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival. The 12-day, awardwinning festival is the longest-running fringe festival in the country, o ering playwrights, actors, stagehands and other performers the opportunity to showcase unjuried, uncensored works on the stage. The annual event brings Orlando’s theatrical community together and gives audience members the chance to interact with those they’ve seen on stage after the shows. ST PETERSBURG | Across the peninsula from Orlando, the city’s Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of the eccentric artist’s work. Compiled over the course of 45 years by longtime patrons, the collection spans nearly all of the styles that Dalí worked in over the course of his career. Some works re ect the Impressionist and Cubist styles that Dalí favored early on, while others show his transition into Surrealism, including The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory, a 1954 painting in which Dalí reinterprets his 1931 work with the famous melting clocks, The Persistence of Memory. The Dalí Museum also features a number of works from the artist’s Classical period in the 1940s and 1950s among its 96 oil paintings, more than 100 watercolors and 1,300 graphics, photographs and sculptures. Among the other works on display are the playfully titled—and playfully executed—Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln and The Hallucinogenic Toreador, in which Dalí blends symbolism, visual motifs and optical 66 ARTS AND CULTURE
