PONTE VEDRA BEACH | This oceanside enclave o ers another incredible golf property—the 65-acre Sawgrass Golf Resort & Spa, a Marriott Resort, touted as the second largest golf resort in America and home of The Players Championship golf tournament, which draws the sport’s top players every year (past champs included Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods). Marriott guests can play the same courses—the Players Stadium Course and Dye’s Valley Course—as well as take their shots at four practice facilities and six practice greens. And any true golf enthusiast just might swoon upon seeing the TPC Clubhouse, a massive Mediterranean Revivalstyle facility lled with exhibits and displays, a golf shop, restaurant and lounge, along with meeting and banquet space. But it’s not all about the greens in this golf mecca: Sawgrass Golf Resort also o ers a 25,000-square-foot spa, four resort swimming pools, Grasshopper Gang children’s programs and access to 26 miles of beaches at the private Cabana Beach Club. 72 GOLF COURTESY OF REUNION RESORT AMELIA ISLAND | Amelia Island Plantation dominates the local golf scene with four championship golf courses—designed by the likes of Pete Dye, Bobby Weed, Tom Jackson and Tom Fazio— bordering the ocean, marshes and wooded interior of the resort. The 36-hole Oak Marsh and Ocean Links courses, for example, take players along tidal creeks, mammoth sand dunes and greenside bunkers, past centuries-old live oaks and through serpentine marshlands. Ocean Links’ signature feature is its strategic use of water, with 10 holes that feature lagoons or marsh wetlands, wrapping up with a par three whose green is actually in Red Maple Lake. Fazio’s Long Point also works in water e ectively, forcing players to shot-carry the water hazard in eight di erent instances. The course winds through three di erent settings, giving golfers both gorgeous scenery changes and fresh challenges every time. This combination of good looks and tough play earned Long Point a spot on Golfweek magazine’s list of top 50 courses in Florida. OFFICIAL FLORIDA TRAVEL INDUSTRY GUIDE 2010
