Surrounding the space center is the vast Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, which is home to more than 1,500 plants and animals, including Florida’s beloved manatees. Dining/Nightlife: The Surf Bar and Grill in Cocoa Beach, eight miles south of the port, is well-known as a favorite spot for current astronauts on down time—their predecessors used to come here for their last meals before heading into orbit.
