Planners Meet With Purpose at Hilton
New wellness initiatives put attendee and community well-being front and center

here's no question that today's
attendees are seeking out healthy
choices when they're on the road.
Meetings should offer them the chance
to continue their wellness routines. At
the same time, if giving back and being
environmentally conscious are part of their
lifestyles, they want to be able to integrate
these choices as well.
That's what Hilton's "Meet With Purpose"
initiative is all about: making it easier for MICE
professionals to incorporate wellness and
sustainable practices into meetings
and events.
The vision behind the initiative belongs
to Toni Zoblotksy, Hilton's director of B2B
marketing, who filled us in on the specifics
of some of the offerings during IMEX this
past October. For example, there's "Puppy
Cuddling," a 30-minute afternoon break
where attendees enjoy ice cream and get to
cuddle with puppies from local shelters. Not
only do attendees love it, but it gives the
dogs a much needed dose of affection.
During a yoga and yogurt event,
attendees do a yoga flow and then enjoy
a yogurt parfait breakfast. "It's the perfect
opportunity for a planner to delight their
attendees by providing an exercise activity
and a breakfast rolled into one package," is

how Zoblotsky described it. "It allows them
to stay on the rails with their fitness program
when they travel."

Keeping it Sustainable
In addition to wellness, "Meet With
Purpose" is about sustainability. Hilton's
catering experts encourage meeting
planners to reexamine their F&B to minimize
food waste and encourage healthy choices,
offering solutions such as portion control,
pre-plating salads and establishing central
water stations with reusable containers. In
the meeting room, less resource-intensive
practices might include using paperless
registration or turning off a room's climate
control when not in session.
This focus is already transforming
meetings held at Hilton's hotels. For example,
the Hilton San Francisco Union Square
hosted an event that draws approximately
60,000 attendees. Hilton's team helped

the company recycle 66,858 pounds of
waste material, source approximately 30
percent of energy from renewable sources
and contribute more than 1.3 tons of food
donations. The Hilton Chicago has a strong
recycling and composting program and
partners with local farms to source food locally
(in addition to growing their own vegetables
on a rooftop garden), and will work with
planners to incorporate these practices into
their meetings.
On the CSR side, Hilton has partnered
with Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop
Hunger Now) to offer meal-packing events.
This dynamic nonprofit's mission is nothing
short of ending world hunger. The activity
can be scaled to an organization's needs;
50 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in
just two hours.-Barbara Scofidio

WowMakers Update
Hilton's "WOWMakers" initiative
celebrates how meeting and event
planners "wow" their attendees and
clients. As part of the "WowMakers
Make Amazing Happen" competition,
planners were invited to nominate
themselves or a fellow planner who
went above and beyond to deliver
a "wow" experience to clients. Ten
nominees won a trip to a 2018 industry
event of their choice and a grand prize
winner will be featured in an upcoming
Hilton ad campaign.
