and hotels ready themselves for the
demands of the future while also
integrating more seamlessly into
the neighborhoods and cultural
acumen where they reside.

Across the MICE spectrum, localization was the main directive
throughout 2017, and it resulted in some pretty cool multi-platform,
multidisciplinary programs that essentially built a crossroads for
education, entertainment, cultural and environmental sensitivity and
community impact. Big-time conventions with an intimate, smalltown vibe were coveted by attendees across the globe. Within this
schema, technology emerged as a tool for connecting and engaging
attendees, streamlining logistics and driving diversity. Disruption
was also the talk of the town, with its own very philosophical take
on meetings and conventions: How can we extrapolate the cues of
future meetings disruption and use them to drive positive innovation
in communities that are ever-changing and becoming ever more
globalized? How do we define negative disruption when virtually all
disruption can lead to innovation and economic opportunity? Capping
off 2017 was the weaving in of some of the hot topics of our time,
like equality and sustainability, more boldly into the meetings matrix,
adding a new dimension to the MICE experience. All of these ideas
created a natural levee that worked to shift the river of conventions
into refreshingly wild and uncharted waters.
As we move into 2018, look for even deeper localization
as the demand for neighborhood conferences and conventions
continues to hold meaning to attendees. We've listed some of the
most notable conference and convention center expansions and
renovations to date, as well as distinct neighborhood experiences,
recommended by those who know best. People. Place. Shared
value. Smart (and increasingly sustainable) economic development.
