like) the famous Mercer House from the
novel "Midnight in the Garden of Good &
Evil," now the Mercer-Williams House
Museum. The boutique Cotton Sail
Hotel's and River Street Inn, both
converted from 19th century cotton
warehouses, still retain their charms with
200-year-old hardwood floors and other
hints of the past. Head to Cotton Sail's Top
Deck rooftop bar for wines and local brews
and what are arguably some of the best
views of the city. Adjacent to the Inn is the
Olde Pink House, one of Savannah's most
popular restaurants that's housed in an 18th
century mansion, while the nearby River
House serves up local favorites like crispy
scored flounder and shrimp and grits.
Lastly, it's kind of a rite of passage
to plunge your meeting or incentive group
into Savannah's best "haunts." Old Town
Trolley Tours of Savannah's hop-on, hopoff "Ghosts & Gravestones" tour includes
some of the most haunted places, including
Perkin's & Sons Ship Chandlery, believed

to be the city's "paranormal epicenter."
Groups can expect impromptu visits by
historical characters, enlivening an already
eyes-wide-open experience, and no
shortage of watering holes along the route
to keep the spirits at bay.

GREAT BRITAIN
The "Year of Literary Heroes" is underway
in Britain in recognition of Jane Austen's
treasured characters, as well as Harry
Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood and
a plethora of other literary faves. The theme
explores the senses and new sensibilities
for meetings and incentives as well. New
exhibitions are unfolding at Jane Austen's
House Museum in Hampshire county, and
a "Sitting with Jane" public art exhibition
comprised of 24 hand-painted benches
designed to look like open books immerse
groups in Austen's life and time. Themes
from the author's novels and letters are also
being explored-from apothecary to tea
and chats with historians. Consider a film

screening, musical bingo cabaret or Jane
Austen picnic pack filled with Regency-era
recipes, quizzes and games.
Speaking of literary heroes, "Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"
screenings accompanied by live
orchestral performances of John Williams'
score are taking place in Birmingham,
Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and
London's Royal Albert Hall. And when
it comes to transformative experiences,
it doesn't get much better than a gala
event at Shakespeare's New Place in
Warwickshire, the final home of William
Shakespeare where "The Tempest" was
purportedly written. The estate offers
immersive exhibits and meeting space for
up to 250, and room for an additional 120
(with catering for 200 attendees) at the
adjacent Anne Hathaway's Cottage.
Trekking along to London, the
Sanderson Hotel is honoring author Lewis
Carroll with "Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea" and
"Mad Hatters Tipsy Evening Tea" services
filled with hidden menus, teapots fit for kings
and queens and other whimsical touches.
The sweet and savory seasonal menus
incorporate fun Carroll interpretations like the
King of Hearts croque-monsieur stack and
Tweedle Dee's lemon curd. Special alcoholinfused chocolate and rum chessboard
cakes with flights of four cocktails intermixed
are served during evening tea, and both tea
services come with a mysterious "drink me"
potion. Carl Walsh, director of travel trade
and business events with VisitBritain, says,
literary lore aside, transformative culinary
experiences abound throughout Great
Britain, whether "a foraging expedition off the
Pembrokeshire Coast or hikes along
the world's only Whiskey Trail in Scotland
that includes the oldest distillery in the
Highlands. Groups want to participate
in the F&B experience."

ATLANTA
Atlanta has gobbled up 60 James Beard
semifinalist nominations in the past five
years. This year, Steven Satterfield of the
Miller Union restaurant also won the top
award for "Best Chef Southeast." The city's
culinary appeal can be characterized by
