Zydeco, bustling festivals, historic Antebellum homes and Cajun
cuisine, but they return for its hospitality. The city has experienced
a renaissance in its downtown core as of late that has ushered in
almost a dozen new places to grab drinks and listen to live music,
as well as a number of new hotels. The new 132-room Courtyard
Marriott is the biggest news; it's expected to open later this year.
The Old State Capitol, Louisiana Art & Science Museum
and nearby Afton Villa Gardens are all striking locations for events,
and a bus tour with Red Stick Adventure Tours showcases the
city's historic mansions and tree-lined neighborhoods, while also
giving attendees the option to experience what it's like to be on a
Mardi Gras float.
A revitalization of Birmingham's Theatre District includes the
renovation and reopening of the historic Lyric Theatre, which
sparked the transformation of the Pizitz building into the Pizitz Food
Hall, offering everything from Ethiopian cuisine to chicken and waffles.
Meeting planners can get crafty here in its outdoor courtyard.

Theatre District includes the
renovation of the Lyric Theatre.
The circa '30s Carver Theatre, home to the Alabama Jazz
Hall of Fame, is also renovating and reopening this year with live jazz
performances and event rental space. As one of the first movie houses
for African Americans to see first-run films, the theater will be part of
Birmingham's newly designated Civil Rights National Monument,
which encompasses historic sites across four city blocks.
Another noteworthy transformation: a $45 million
redevelopment of the Empire Building into the luxury 111-room
Elyton Hotel, surrounded by the financial district's galleries,
boutiques and distinct culinary scene. The hotel's Moon Shine
rooftop lounge is an excellent space for intimate soirees or galas
that need to impress.
