3 Hotels Refresh and Reboot
An inside look at three "must-see" East Coast renovations
when it opens in 2018. The Hard Rock Cafe
Atlantic City will be centrally located within
the property and offer beach access.
The crowning touch, a full-service spa,
will feature relaxing and recharging treatments.
In keeping with Hard Rock's theme, the hotel
will showcase rock-and-roll memorabilia, but
in this case it will be hand-picked with a focus
on musicians from New Jersey.

A

ll eyes are on these three important
renovations: the billion dollar
transformation of New York's iconic
Waldorf Astoria, the development of a new
Hard Rock brand in Atlantic City and a
multimillion dollar refresh of the luxurious
Park Hyatt Washington, DC.

Waldorf Astoria New York
The Waldorf Astoria has hosted every
US president since opening in midtown
Manhattan in 1931, and has been home to
the rich and famous-Frank Sinatra to the
Duke of Windsor. Now New York City's Art
Deco institution has closed its
doors for an estimated $1 billion,
three-year transformation.
Architects at Skidmore, Owings &
Merrill and Paris-based interior designer
Pierre-Yves Rochon are working closely
with the New York City Landmarks
Preservation Commission on what is
being touted as one of the most intensive
landmark preservation efforts in New
York City history.
"We have assembled a world-class
design team with unparalleled experience
restoring and revitalizing historic properties
to create a plan that treats the Waldorf
Astoria New York's history with respect and
dedication to detail," explained Brandon

Dong of the Anbang Insurance Group, the
new owners of the Waldorf Astoria
New York.
The Waldorf's exterior became a
National Historic Landmark in 1993. The
renovation will also see several interior
spaces (including the lobby and the Park
Avenue foyer) designated as official city
landmarks. Three-quarters of its 1,413 rooms
will become luxury condominiums when it
reopens, with the remaining 300-500 hotel
suites operated by Hilton under a100-year
management agreement with the property.

Hard Rock Hotel and Casino
Atlantic City
Shuttered since last fall, Trump Taj Mahal
will soon become the Hard Rock Hotel
and Casino Atlantic City. Hard Rock
International will spend $400 million
rebranding and renovating the property,
which will feature two separate arenas
for up to 7,000 attendees, as well as
redesigned guest rooms, meeting space,
casino, and new food and beverage outlets

The Park Hyatt Washington, DC recently
received a multimillion update of its guest
rooms and lobby. Inspired by DC's bright
spring blooms, the lobby now has two
separate areas with sofas, white oak floors,
area rugs and floor lamps. One area has
a communal table; the other features a
variety of cozy seating, including Windsor
rocking chairs. The focal point of the lobby
is a floor-to-ceiling custom glass cube
depicting cherry blossom trees, created
by photographic glass artist Amanda Weil.
Touches of home have also been added
to the rooms, with custom-designed plaid
wool rugs, rich walnut platform beds with
leather headboards and reading lights, and,
in the suites, daybeds, walnut flooring and
even antique game boards and hardcover
books. Groups will also have 17,000 sf of
formal meeting space at their disposal.
In keeping with the design sensibility,
the hotel's popular restaurant, Blue Duck,
has installed a kitchen garden on the roof
and is hosting chef's table dinners on the
outdoor patio featuring freshly picked
ingredients, complemented by gardeninspired cocktails.-Barbara Scofidio
