however, as the place where wives once watched their husbands
ship out to serve in World War II.
Across the street, the 592-room Fairmont San Francisco
boasts several significant historic references. Known as the White
House of the West, the property's Garden Room is where the
United Nations Charter was drafted, and the Venetian Room
is where Tony Bennett first performed "I Left My Heart in San
Francisco." It's the 6,000-sf penthouse suite that serves as the
hotel's shining gem, however. Three rooms, a billiard room, dining
room, terrace and library make up the suite, which can be used for
private events overlooking the city's iconic Transamerica Pyramid.
Groups staying at the hotel won't want to miss the Tonga Room,
the longest continuously operating tiki bar in the US for more than
70 years. Most nights, a live band plays classic hits on a barge in
the middle of the bar's pool.
The nearby 134-room Scarlet Huntington, named after
Collis P. Huntington, features several luxurious suites painted with
bright pink and red hues matched by black accents. Its Big 4
Restaurant-ideal for private dinners-is a clever nod to the four
famous entrepreneurs and serves up classic American fare such as
chicken pot pie alongside an extensive bourbon and whiskey menu.
The green leather interior, dark lighting and live piano playing set the
stage to transport attendees back in time.
Located in the 1909 Metropolitan Life Insurance building, The
Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco recently underwent a renovation to
its 336 guest rooms. Inspired by men's tailored fashion and colors
of the Bay Area, the rooms feature navy and gray hues with intricate
fashionista touches such as belt buckle knobs on the bedside
tables. Similarly, couture fashion and the fog that often blankets
the city inspired the 26,000 sf of meeting space. Local imagery
also shows up at 5:30 p.m. each day when the hotel hosts a "Fog
Lifter Moment" where the staff serves up a complimentary seasonal
cocktail called the fog lifter. "The cocktails always feature dry ice
to emulate the look of the fog," says Shelly Auyeung, the hotel's
communications specialist.
Rounding out Nob Hill Connection is The Masonic, which
recently reopened with a brand-new concert stage and a seated
capacity for up to 2,560. While meeting planners can rent out the
space, it also serves as an entertainment venue. This summer's
schedule includes a performance by Natalie Merchant, which can be
paired with a pre-show event in one of the venue's private spaces.
