to help rebuild the reef. This is also popular for honeymooners, so you can tell your incentive winners and their spouses that sustainability saves marriages, as well as the planet. “Coral reefs are one of the most spectacular and fragile environments on this planet,” says general manager Frederic Lebegue. “Coral that takes decades to grow can be destroyed so easily which is why we support this project.” Plus, your people can follow their reef’s progress on the hotel’s website. “The Maldives depends on tourism and fishing, which are the two largest contributors to the economy,” says Lebegue. “Both of these industries rely on the continued existence of healthy, vibrant reefs.” Meanwhile, the 221-villa Hilton Maldives Iru Fushi Resort & Spa on Noonu Atoll launched a “Barefoot MICE” program, inviting guests to kick off their shoes and enjoy the resort’s openair meeting spaces, such as luxury tents on the beach. Groups also have exclusive use of a private island. “We pride ourselves on being specialists in creative and innovative meetings and we promise organizers that no event will take place in a dull, stuffy room,” says GM Jean Sebastien King. “Instead, all of the meeting activities can be done barefoot around the resort.” RIVER-TO-FORK CRUISING One of the flashpoints of the environmental movement, the Amazon River basin and broadleaf rainforests are home to the most varied collection of plants and animals on the planet. We hopped aboard the 72-berth, all-inclusive Iberostar Grand Amazon departing Manaus, Brazil—located at the headwaters of the mythical river. When you enter into the girth of the river past the confluence of tributaries, it feels like a lake due to the wide expanses, but at the same time the water is churning quickly, impulsive to move downstream. Not that you’re aware of that while dining on what we discovered to be exceptional cuisine sourced from the jungle. Local, seasonal food is central to the cruising experience, even when you’re tucked away deep down in the Brazilian Amazon. The 270-foot luxury riverboat’s sea level restaurant Kaurup challenges curious palates craving more than the typical Chilean seabass (which is highly unsustainable, by the way). Freshwater fish such as pirarucu, tambaqui, tucunaré, matrinxã and jaraqui are buffet highlights, each with different textures and delightfully fresh flavors. The spicy/sweet tacacá soup with green corn and coconut milk are also consistent hits. Off the menu, there’s the classic surf and turf selections although the lobster wasn’t local to the Amazon. At the upper deck, the more casual Grill Restaurant mstarballoons.com offers lovely panoramic views for sunset cocktails. The $12 million ship is replete with private verandas in the staterooms, Brazilian wood floors, Brazilian marble counters and Park City’s Rising Star After piloting T-37s and T-1A Jayhawks for the USAF, Daren Wilde was up in the air about what aeronautical challenge to tackle next. Owner of Morning Star Balloons in Park City, Wilde is sharing his saga with 11 of us in a wicker gondola attached to a 100-ft tall red balloon filled with 245,000 cubic feet of air. This aerial trek is the opposite of what we envisioned. In fact, it’s downright therapeutic as you silently float 1,420 feet over verdant valleys, wildlife and estate homes with the Wasatch Mountains as a backdrop. Wilde explains that since balloons rely on air currents, our landing site is a bit of a variable. But a chase crew follows us below, keeping in contact via 2-way radios. When we do land, we all begin to work as a crew. Wilde encourages participation, whether it’s rolling out the balloon before lift off or rolling it in after landing. Max capacity is around 75 people using 10 balloons. “When you’re trying to bring a group of people together, there’s nothing like a little adventure or a situation that needs handling,” says Wilde. “Once they’ve conquered the balloon together, they’ve developed camaraderie. It’s a fun activity that can be shared across all levels of organizational structure.”—Dawna Robertson 34 | prevue magazine http://www.mstarballoons.com
