CENTRAL PERKS "Our sunset camel tours are our most popular group experiences," Uluru Camel Tours' sales and marketing manager, Lisa Evans, told us after our hour-long ride. As we sat down to a traditional Australian barbecue (featuring braised emu and Aussie brews), she explained the history of the dromedaries' arrival in the early 1900s, brought by the Afghans and prized for their ability to survive on limited food and water. Today, there are more than a million feral camels in Australia, 60 of them on UCT's ranch, where, guided by a crew of hardy "cameleers," they take visitors on leisurely expeditions through undulating sand dunes. Groups can book private tours followed by an al fresco cocktail party, cookout or campfire; watch camel racing on the farm's track; or stage their own "Olympics," featuring Outback events such as whip-cracking and boot-throwing. "Uluru is the spiritual heart of Australia, and arguably the most special part of the country," says Peter Graham, director of sales for Voyages, which owns and operates Sails In The Desert. "The tours we offer from our resorts encourage [groups] to get out there and explore it; they're about fostering an intimate engagement with the destination." Another unique (albeit temporary) way to do that is by visiting the Field of Light. Created by artist Bruce Munro, it's a solarpowered installation of 50,000 "stems" crowned with flower-like color-changing orbs that are "planted" in the plains surrounding Uluru. An enchanting sight as it glows under the night sky amid "Uluru is the spiritual heart of Australia, and arguably the most special part of the country." what is already such a magical environment, the spectacle is best viewed at sunrise or sunset, and visits can be arranged until it is dismantled next March. Of course, seeing Uluru (Ayers Rock) itself is essential to a Northern Territory trip. And it's easy to arrange a private land tour from the resort to the monolith's base, about 30 minutes' drive away at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (or you can opt for an aerial viewing via a fleet of helicopters, which leave from the resort complex). Considered sacred by the indigenous Aborigines, the "rock star" soars 1,141 feet high (taller than the Eiffel Tower), and descends for almost four miles underground. A guided Uluru Base Walk results in explanations of the spiritual significance of the centuries-old icon to the Aboriginal people. It's estimated that Aborigines have lived here for more than 20,000 years (long before British colonists, who arrived in the late 1700s), and their connection to the land, and the mythology surrounding it, passed from generation to generation orally and thorough the arts, is both complex and fascinating. At Maruku Arts Warehouse, established by the Anangu community that lives within the national park, groups can have private art showings and take interactive classes with local elders, who demonstrate their skills using rudimentary tools to carve local hardwoods into utensils and weapons. prevuemeetings.com | 63 http://www.prevuemeetings.com
