Go “Green” With Israel Welcome to “Israel—100 Years of Green,” an in-depth look at eco-tourism in an ancient land whose growth into one of the most eco-conscious countries in the world and whose very existence, was developed from its successful efforts to use and preserve a neglected environment that enabled them to “make the desert bloom.” On Earth Day 2010, Israel’s Ministry of Tourism, North America launched a 24-month promotion underscoring Israel’s pivotal role in the worldwide environmental movement: Israel—100 Years of Green. For many destinations around the world, latching on to the “green” bandwagon is all the rage. In Israel, these practices and ideologies have long been implemented into every aspect of Israeli life. “We looked around and everybody is talking about green tourism and eco-tourism like it’s a new thing and yet we’ve been doing it for 100 years now without even naming it this. We’ve been doing sustainable tourism and we’ve planted trees and we can count back 100 years to the first rural settlement and community,” explains Michal Itzik, the northeast region director of the Israel Ministry of Tourism in New York City. “Ever since, we’ve planted more trees than any country in the world; we have water-saving drip irrigation technology, which is the highest end technology; and we have solar power for electricity that’s used in everyday life. So when we looked at what we have to offer—we said, ‘Hey, we have green tourism, we have agritourism, so let’s give it a title and promote it as such.’” The Ministry of Tourism’s plan is based on the following principles: environmentally sensitive planning and development; preservation of the cultural and social heritage; developing tourism and new jobs in agricultural areas and the periphery while improving the quality of life for the residents and educating and raising awareness among residents and tourists about the importance of developing sustainable tourism. The Ministry’s plans include: “…promoting standardization in green building; establishing an incentives framework for entrepreneurs based on green tourism criteria; encouraging renovation, rehabilitation and preservation of existing buildings and facilities; and developing infrastructure and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.” On the marketing side, a “green vacation” will be actively offered to tourists. A visitor management plan at tourist sites, ecotourism trained guides, and eco-tourism activities will also factor into this new plan. It’s not really an established program where various tourism entities are involved, Itzik explains, “It’s more of an awareness-raising campaign, because again, a lot of places in Israel are practicing green without really calling it that. The newest site in Israel used to be the biggest dump where all of metropolitan Tel Aviv used to put their garbage. No longer, now it’s a recycling park. It’s educational, you can ride bikes there and you can learn about recycling. It’s quite near the airport and it’s called Ariel Sharon Park [a.k.a. Ayalon Park] and it’s one of the newest attractions.” While the Ministry itself is not particularly subsidizing green projects within Israel per se, it really doesn’t have to because green projects have become a way of life in a country where eco-friendly activities are a necessity because they had to have that mind set in order to conquer a harsh environment for their very existence. As a result, there’s a variety of eco-oriented attractions and accommodations just about everywhere you go in Israel and many more are on the way. In fact, in the Negev Desert, Itzik points out, “We have a very big, unique eco-hotel that’s going to be opened in the Ramon Crater and it’s supposed to be ready in either February or March of 2011. All the rooms are going be like little cabins, it’s going to have its own spa and from the pictures I’ve seen, it looks like it’s going to be amazing. It’s going to be a very high-end desert experience where you’ll be able to enjoy nature, while preserving it at the same time.” Israel’s huge number of religious, historical and cultural attractions, in fact, are all dependent on the country’s long-standing emphasis on preservation and sustainability—the cornerstone of eco-tourism.
