Green History Certainly from a historical viewpoint, the early Zionist immigrants from Russia and later from all across Europe in the early 19th century were the forerunners of modern Israel’s Green Movement, in terms of utilizing and preserving the land and environment in a responsible way. These early pioneers literally changed the face of the landscape by planting trees, draining swamps, and countless other hard-craft activities to make the land productive. These, in fact, were the first people in what is now modern-day Israel to make “…the desert bloom.” The first kibbutzim were founded in the upper Jordan Valley, the Jezreel Valley and the Sharon coastal plain. The land was available for purchase because it was marshy and malaria-infested. As the kibbutz system evolved from its early emphasis on agriculture into a more social movement, it was still increasingly effective as an agricultural entity, producing in excess of 30 percent of the country’s agricultural products by the time modern-day Israel came into being in 1948 and on into the 1960s. In the mid-1970s, it was the kibbutz community that took the lead in developing organic farming systems, eco-friendly pest control methods, organic composting and even developing organic wines. All of these eco-friendly developments that continued through the 80s and spread throughout Israel’s entire agricultural industry—including the development of not only environmentally friendly irrigation practices, but highly effective irrigation systems for use in the desert and other arid lands—caught the attention of the worldwide ecological organizations and enthusiasts and visitors began to flock to the country to experience these programs. Israel’s growth and increased immigration also necessitated even more expansion in the pursuit of ecologically sound practices to ensure quality of life, not just for today, but for the future of the growing country that by this time had expanded its manufacturing and service economies exponentially in what is a relatively tiny country. It’s no wonder then that Israel has drawn the attention of the always growing worldwide interest in ecological concerns and thereby creating what has to be one of the most successful “Green Tourism” products in the world. Everywhere you go in modern-day Israel you’ll find eco-tourist products, from its numerous eco-lodges with their focus on sustainable and eco-friendly facilities, to the newer kibbutz programs that have become tourist attractions themselves. In fact, no where is that transition from traditional kibbutz to a modern-day center for eco-learning more apparent. There’s lodging for visitors who want to participate in virtually every aspect of eco-tourism, from straight out leisure taking advantage of an ecofriendly lodge with a variety of holistic and therapeutic procedures, to eco-learning classes where visitors can learn about everything from alternative building and creative recycling to organic gardening. There’s also an eco-campus where students can take part in a green apprentice program or do a college semester on peace, justice and the environment. At the Lotan Constructed Wetlands and Ecological-Educational Bird Park, visitors can not only experience birding, but they’ll also have the opportunity to learn about how the park was built and why. Developed as the heart of a planned ecological-educational bird park, it also serves as an example of extensive wetlands in Arava Valley for other neighboring communities and as a test ground for appropriate plants and building methods in the desert climate. Finally, it will serve to end the current sewage disposal pollution of the land and aquifer, which is an aesthetic and olfactory nuisance as well as an environmental hazard. There’s a host of other major ecological and environmental projects that reflect Israel’s long-time history of land reclamation Israel’s I-6 recommend.com http://www.recommend.com
