G stacey zablecap 38 august 2012 onsite review july 2011 Guests of Wequassett Resort and Golf Club in Chatham, Massachusetts, will feel as if they’re visiting a friend’s beach house, well, actually a luxury beach house with an excellent “household staff.” And like any good host or hostess, Wequassett’s little details and personal touches help to create a vacation with everlasting memories. The four-star/four-diamond resort in Cape Cod embodies Americana with white-washed buildings and clapboard cottages set throughout its 27 acres. The views from select guestrooms and the outdoor main pool look out over Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It ﬁrst opened in 1944 and a $40 million 2-year renovation and expansion was completed in spring 2010. The welcoming experience begins at check-in at the cozy self-contained reception area, which offers a small bed and breakfast living room feel. The resort has a bit of a nostalgic aura to it, providing a feeling that guests are returning to a better, simpler time. memory makers accommodations The 120 guestrooms and suites are spread throughout the property, accessible via meandering brick walkways that are lined with classic Cape ﬂowers, such as hydrangeas and azaleas. Walkways also lead to the main recreation and dining buildings, also featuring the classic Cape Cod-style architecture. The new Signature Collection guestrooms completed in 2009 offer true luxurious decor and touches. They are oversized with customdesigned king or two queen-size bedding, sitting areas facing marble ﬁreplaces and large decks facing Pleasant Bay. The large marble bathrooms feature double sinks, garden tubs, separate showers and separate toilets. Other accommodations choices include Cape Cod Cottages with two, three and four bedrooms with patios and porches, and traditional Villa style rooms with king or two queen beds. All come with porches or patios. For larger families, entire residences can be booked for a beach house-style vacation, with access to resort amenities. The staff here have been trained and empowered to fulﬁll guests’ needs and wishes. The resort even has a staff “Memory Maker” whose sole job is to ﬁnd out guests’ interests and “dazzle them.” Examples of this magic can be as simple as securing a copy of a book that a guest mentioned they wanted to read or creating a surprise birthday party. Frontline employees are also given authority to do whatever they can to make guests happy. We experienced this ﬁrst hand. We liked the public restroom hand lotion so much that we asked at the resort store if they stocked it for purchase. Though the answer was no, it was followed up with a promise that the store manager could see what he could do. Later that day, two full-size hand cream bottles beautifully delivered in gift bags at no charge were sent to our room. More touches that create memories for all include a vintage Good Humor Ice Cream-style truck from the 1950s. The bell rings each afternoon at the main pool and everyone lines up for complimentary ice cream. Another special amenity is the complimentary Pillow Pet program. Children ﬁll out a form at check-in choosing from the resort “Pillow Pet” menu and a Pee-Wee sized pillow pet is delivered to their guestroom in a pet carrier on day one of their vacation. The circular main pool, the resort’s family pool, overlooks Pleasant Bay and Round Cove. An elevated Brazilian wood boardwalk that wraps around the pool has cabanas available for an extra fee. It’s pure relaxation to spend the day here, where a staff member is available to take care of needs such as suntan lotion, drinks and food. An adult pool by the tennis center does not offer a view, but is a true quiet respite. A small non-distinct beach is accessible from the main pool, but a better beach experience can be found at the Outer Beach, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. It’s accessible via boat launch from Wequassett’s dock. Guests should spend some time on a boat whether or not they head to the beach, just to view the magniﬁcent shoreline.
