SHOPPING TREASURES celebrations for all seasons January 4-6 Carnival of Blacks and Whites in Pasto; recognized as part of Colombia's National Cultural Heritage. It's an indigenous cultural showcase that perfectly expresses all the cultural influences-Indian, Spanish, and African-that have been in play in the region for centuries. January Cartagena International Music Festival plays host to prominent figures of the classic music scene, offering concerts in the city's most charming spots and brings classical music to the city's underprivileged neighborhoods with workshops and special concerts. February/March One of the world's best, the Carnaval de Barranquilla takes place during four entire days in the runup to Lent, a giant costumed affair with live bands beating out salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton and cumbia. March/April During Holy Week or Semana Santa, Popayan stages the country's grandest religious processions on Palm Sunday, Good Tuesday and Good Friday; Colombia's second most important Semana Santa celebrations have been held in the sleepy river town of Mompox near the Caribbean coast since 1546. April Bogota hosts the Ibero-American Theater Festival, one of the largest, greatest performing arts festivals in the world. August Medellin is 'abloom during the Medellin Flower Fair early in the month; it offers over 140 cultural, traditional, and modern events, including an old and classic cars parade, a dog walk, musical and cultural platforms, the festival of remembrance and folk songs, and the chiva carnival (a chiva is the typical open-sided bus built on a truck chassis). September Bogota is host to the Jazz in the Park Festival, staged throughout the city parks with top performers from Latin America and elsewhere; this is the month of the Cali Salsa Fair, too. November Independence of Cartagena and the National Beauty Pageant are observed with parades and festivities during the first two weeks of November. Also, in Leticia, the International Festival of Amazonian Folk Music honors music, culture and traditions of the region. December 25-January 1 Horse rider processions, masked and costumed dances, bullfights and the salsa marathon mark the Cali Fair; a Festival of Lights keeps Villa de Leyva aglow. 10 june 2014 The best buys are clothing and accessories in leather and wool, reproductions of pre-Columbian gold jewelry and fine emeralds. Keep in mind that as the home of Colombia's fashion industry, Medellin is blessed with lots of home-grown creative talent on view in bespoke fashion boutiques. Among many markets countrywide, just two to keep in mind are the Sunday Flea Market in Bogota's Usaquen district, a multi-street emporium of arts, crafts, jewelry and clothing; in the Old City in Cartagena, occupying former dungeons and called Las Bovedas, are colorful craft shops selling high-quality crafts, everything from hammocks and homewares to baskets, ceramics and oil paintings. When in the highlands, Colombia's handmade woolen ponchos (ruanas) are always a good buy, and, of course, most travelers go home with a pound or two of coffee. wildlife DISCOVERIES Colombia is one of the world's most biodiverse nations-its call of the wild answered from the Andean highlands to the Eastern Llanos fluvial plains, and from the Amazon to the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. Consider just these two options: BIRDING Top of the list for birders is the Caribbean region, whose Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain area shelters the world's highest density of endemic birds, while the Andean highlands in general are home to hundreds of hummingbird species. Coffee Country is another region for top birding, with some of the best found in the Rio Blanco Reserve near Manizales and the Ucumari Regional Park and Otun Quimbaya Flora & Fauna Sanctuary near Pereira. In Amazonia, head for the Amacayacu National Park whose canopy is alive with the cries of parrots and toucans. A particular birding hotspot is the Bahia Solano area where the beach and mangroves meet the rainforest on the Pacific Coast. WHALE WATCHING One of the greatest natural marvels is that of the annual southern migration of the humpback whales, which come from as far as Antarctica to give birth to their calves from June to November. The most spectacular sightings take place off the Choco department's Pacific coast (accessible by air from Medellin and Quibdo). Top viewing places include Bahia Solano, El Valle, Nuqui and the Ensenada Utria National Park. Farther south, other great places for whales (humpback and killer, plus sea turtles and manta rays) are the Isla Gorgona National Park and the coastal waters of the Bahia de Malaga in the Cauca department. Whale watching in Choco.
