in your conferences or by invitation. We
will be looking for input from the industry
on studies to gather data to make us a more
efficient organization. I think that will be to
everybody's benefit. If we're more efficient
and we're operating in a way that makes the
industry say, "That makes sense," rather
than "Why are they doing this?" or "Why
are they still trying to enforce this outdated
regulation?" this gives us more credibility.
The way we get there is through these
studies and through moving forward on
hard data. And I think it gives confidence to
the industry that we're moving in the right
direction. Of course, it's done, hopefully, in
participation with the industry. That would
be our goal.
What other message or messages
would you like to leave our members,
who represent motorcoach operators,
the travel industry and tour operators,

and other suppliers of equipment and
services to our industry?

I intend to be an active participant in
anything ABA invites me to-not just to
push out information, but also to listen. I
am a strong believer in associations, but I
want to reach beyond your membership
to those who don't belong to one. I know
that those in the industry-the folks out
there driving motorcoaches, and owners
of motorcoaches-are not all members of
the American Bus Association or other
associations. They should be, because it's
a way we can communicate. Government
communicates with industry, and industry communicates with government. It's
how we make sure anybody who's operating out there is operating to standards set
by the industry that surpass government
standards, or certainly meeting the
government standards. I have found in
my past experience entities-whether

it's companies or individuals-that are
active members of associations tend to
be the safer operators. They are the more
responsible operators, the ones more
plugged into the real needs of an industry.
We don't have the ability to talk to the
many thousands of businesses or individuals involved in this industry one-on-one,
but we can do it through this association.
So, I put a high value on that. I hope your
members recognize the direct line ABA
has to the FMCSA as part of the value
they get from being an ABA member. I
don't want any daylight between us as any
issues develop; we should know about
them right away. I hope if ABA members
see anything develop, that maybe even
ABA as an association hasn't seen yet,
they feel comfortable communicating it.
We need to have communication from the
grass-roots level through their leadership
to your government partners.
