and even a chef's
New Haven may be famous for Yale University, but among foodies it's really
famous for being the place where some say hamburgers were invented and
for America's best pizza.
Pizza in New Haven is a called "apizza." It's charred. It's thin. It's oblong,
and if you want to be an insider, you know it's topped with "mootz," not
mozzarella. Two of the best joints to visit or order from are Sally's and
Pepe's, both on Wooster Street.
As for burgers, Louis' Lunch on Crown Street claims it was the first
restaurant to ever serve a hamburger. That was in the year 1900-when it
was a food wagon. Its boast must be true, because the Library of Congress
has dubbed it "The Birthplace of the Hamburger Sandwich."
For a foodie tour of the city, contact Taste of New Haven, which offers
walking tours in cooperation with 70 restaurants. To learn more, visit
www.tasteofnewhaven.com. Afterward, walk off the calories with a free
tour of Yale; groups of 25 or more should call (203) 432-2300 to make
arrangements two weeks in advance.
