Growing Bigger
Near the end of the 2011–2012 school year, students began to discuss bringing businesses into the town. They voted to accept a proposal for an ice cream shop, which paved the way for two students to start setting up the business with $91,000 of seed money. This school year, the students will continue to introduce businesses to the town. Foster said that architectural students may want to build an office building, and environmental engineering students may want to build a zoo. There is also talk of grocery stores, amusement parks and even a night club. They will also continue to establish laws and will even participate in court sessions

where they will try, and rule on, actual discipline cases of their fellow students. “They’ll learn a lot about how the real world operates—that’s the goal of everything,” Foster said. Principal Wheeler noted the success of the program is already evident through student interest. Since its inception, there have been waiting lists both years to get into the program. He’s also hired a new vice principal of Innovation who will oversee the academy. He said the school already plans on creating another Innovation Academy involving the arts, and there may be more in the future. “We need innovation in education, and the only way we’re going to get it is if we have the kids and teachers offer up solutions,” he said.
