Leadership Matters

From the Tongass to the Tundra:
Leadership Development in Alaska

Geographically, Alaska is
a big state, covering over 586,412
square miles of ice, rock, tundra,
mountains and forests. With a statewide
population of less than 700,000, it really
is just a small town. Within this small
town is the even smaller community of
career and technical education (CTE)
professionals who are separated by
miles of roadless tundra and mountains
accessible only by boats in the summer,
snow machines in the winter, and as the
weather allows, small-wheeled and float
planes year-round.
This community of CTE professionals is resilient and dedicated, and seeks
to serve their students and profession in
many ways. This past year, the statewide CTE professional organization, the

Alaska Association of Career and Technical Education (AACTE), reached out to
these CTE professionals and provided
them with an opportunity to connect and
serve the association through leadership
development. What follows is their story.

Seeing a Need
In recent years, the AACTE Board of
Directors were the dedicated and committed leaders who kept the organization
viable through member services and
activities. But that dedication and commitment meant that past presidents were
being recycled through the ranks two and
three times. The Board definitely needed
a new strategy, one that would excite
the remaining members and encourage
them to step up to lead the organization.

To that end the Board sent out a survey
to determine what activities and services
members would find meaningful and
engaging. The Board was heartened when
the results of the survey indicated leadership development as the top item members
would find beneficial. The Board saw this
as a golden opportunity to strengthen the
organization through leadership development while responding to their members’
expressed needs. The Leadership Institute
was created out of this serendipitous event.
Taking advantage of their connection
with the national Association of Career
and Technical Education (ACTE), and
specifically the Region V ACTE, the
AACTE Board sought out, and was
awarded, a grant to seed the creation
of the Leadership Institute. In addition,
the state director of CTE at the Alaska
Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) saw the institute as an
excellent opportunity to support her goal
of building a statewide network of CTE
professionals, and so she stepped in with a
contribution of additional funds for travel
to provide access and opportunity for all
CTE professionals who had the desire
to participate in the Institute. To add
value to the Institute, the major provider
of CTE continuing education credits in
Alaska, the Community and Technical
College (CTC) at the University of Alaska
Anchorage, was engaged to provide the
institutional structure for the Institute and
offer the participants the opportunity to
earn credit.
Networks of CTE exist around the
state, but due to geographic challenges,
the members of these networks are not
able to connect on a larger, statewide
