school serves approximately 800 students,
graduates more than 90 percent, and
in the last 10 years, MVHS has had 32
Gates Millennium Scholarship winners.
The school seamlessly weaves nursing,
welding, construction, agriculture science,
business management, marketing and
early childhood into a primarily university-bound curriculum. Monument Valley
CTE Director Clyde McBride choreographs expanding and improving each
of these areas with not only no resistance
from Kayenta Unified Superintendent
Harry Martin, but also with the intense
support, understanding and involvement around the leveraging of CTE and
academics.

An Interview with TIME
At MVHS, under the umbrella of agriculture science is veterinary science. On
one of my visits to Navajo Nation schools,
I was not able to observe MVHS’s
Veterinary Science Program. But it was
clear that by the rave descriptions of this
program, I had missed out on something
quite special. I became a vicarious/virtual supporter of the program and actively
worked on a way to promote it. Through
a series of events, and with help from former SPI Carolyn Warner, we were able
to collaborate with journalist Joe Klein,
who was working on writing an Arizona
CTE story for TIME magazine. In the
end, some colleagues and I were able to
“introduce” Klein to MVHS’s Veterinary
Science Program as a topic for the article.
In early April 2012, Superintendents
Huppenthal and Warner, as well as Klein
and myself, flew out to observe and ultimately report on the MVHS vet science
program. We were greeted by CTE Director McBride and his entourage of FFA
kids from the MVHS vet program.
The students conducted the welcome,
orientation and most of the tour. Klein
interviewed the students, the teachers
and staff and faced off with prize bulls,
horses, sheep, rams and dogs of all ages.
Students taught him how to suture, trim
