2013 shows slight decline

comparison of household goods shipment
volume for the past three years, based on AMSA
data studies, shows that for the full year of 2013,
total household goods (first proviso) traffic was
down 0.9% from 2012, the same percentage decline as in the
previous year. After 2010 saw a 5% increase, the past few
years have seen little change year to year.
Shipments for individual customers were the only sector
to show an increase last year, up a strong 5.8%. Government
shipments, especially military moves, were down
significantly in 2013 from 2012, for the fifth consecutive
year. These sectors had held fairly steady several years ago
as private sector moves plummeted, but government budget
cutbacks are clearly affecting these sectors. The strongest
segment of the industry over the past few years has been
corporate moves, though it fell in 2013 by a little more than
one percent.
So far, 2014 is not looking like it will be a better year,
with most sectors continuing to see shipment declines. The
one exception is the COD market, which is up slightly
so far this year. For April, COD numbers were up 0.5%,

with corporate moves also slightly up. Military shipments
are once again down significantly, as the Government
continues to shrink its spending through sequestration and
other efforts. The increase in GSA moves in April may be a
temporary jump, as it is down for the year so far.
