timing of moves

June still most popular month to move

I

n 2013, June continued to be the most popular month
to move, but it was only 30 shipments ahead of July,
with each coming in at 11.4% of the yearly totals picked
up in that month. This was a much more balanced year
than four years ago, when more than 13% of the annual
moves took place in June. February is in its usual place as
the slowest month, with only 5.9% of the moves in the year.
November is often a slow month, but last year it was busier
than both December and March, at 7%.

Overall, 2013 volume was more evenly distributed
throughout the year, compared to many of the previous
years in this chart. The flattening of the volume in the peak
months may have been a result of the capacity limits we have
been facing as an industry. May was a very busy month last
year, as the summer seems to start a little earlier. In the past
few years, more moves were pushed back later in the year
but this time more people tried to get a head start on the
summer peak moving season by moving in May.
