Short Line Connector - Fall 2016 - 28

MEET THE STAFF

KATHY KEENEY, VICE PRESIDENT,
MEMBER ENGAGEMENT & SALES

In each issue of Short Line Connector, we introduce you to a member of the internal ASLRRA
team. Each ASLRRA team member brings experiences and skills to the Association.
Short Line Connector: When did you
join the staff of the ASLRRA?

SLC: What's your favorite aspect of being
a part of the ASLRRA team and being
located at the ASLRRA headquarters?

Kathy Keeney: I joined ASLRRA in
May 2015. While that makes me one of
the newbies on the staff, it doesn't feel that
way because I've been working with the
Association for decades.
SLC: Tell us about your professional experiences leading up to this point.
KK: I didn't set out to be in transportation, but as it turns out, I have been for
my entire career. Even my earliest summer
jobs during college were at the old Civil
Aeronautics Board and Department of
Transportation in Washington, D.C.
Prior to joining ASLRRA, I served as the
publisher of three prominent railroad
directories and enjoyed a close working
relationship with ASLRRA. I also served
as editor of a monthly national railroad
magazine and as editor of a short line
publication launched during the heyday
of Class I line sale spin-offs fueled by the
Staggers Rail Act. I learned a lot about
short lines by covering railroad cases at the
Supreme Court and hearings in Congress,
as well as reading lots of short line regulatory filings at the old ICC (currently the
Surface Transportation Board).
SLC: And you are active in the industry as
well, correct?
KK: I'm a joiner by nature and a big
believer in networking and mentoring. I'm
a longtime member of the League of Railway Industry Women (LRIW), previously
serving as vice president and president.

SLC: What drew you to your current
position at ASLRRA?
KK: The move was a natural step because
I knew many of the people, I knew the
issues and I loved the industry. When
Linda Bauer Darr reached out to me and
shared her vision for the job and future
direction of the Association, I knew this
was something I wanted to be a part of -
it was the smoothest job transition ever.
SLC: What new member engagement
opportunities should ASLRRA members
look for in the near future?
KK: One of the exciting things we are
rolling out is the addition of communities
within our website, where members can
learn and engage with each other. On the
exhibit side, we are selling booths for our
2017 CONNECTIONS Convention at
the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas.
I'm working to make the large exhibit
space feel cozier and, at the same time,
more productive and engaging for our
exhibitors and attendees.

SHORT LINE CONNECTOR // FALL 2016

KK: Hands down the best part of my job
is being able to help some of our 1,000
member companies with membership
questions, booth purchases, ad or sponsorship questions, login credentials for
the website, training templates and much
more. The ASLRRA staff is a fun bunch
to work with, and they go the extra mile
every day. As for ASLRRA HQ, I grew up
in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and
started my career here, and now, 25-plus
years later, I'm back. I had forgotten how
much I enjoyed coming into the city,
and being able to take MARC commuter
rail is just a bonus. There are mornings
walking out of Union Station that are
just magical as the sun comes up over our
nation's capital.
SLC: What hobbies or pastimes do you
keep up with outside the office?
KK: I enjoy traveling and sports. It's heaven
on earth when you can combine both as I
did in family and parish trips to Ireland that
were wrapped around Notre Dame Fighting
Irish football games in Dublin. I also follow
my local teams, the Baltimore Orioles and
the Baltimore Ravens.
SLC: What's the single thing you cannot
do without during your workday?
KK: Picking one is tough. I've always been
a news junkie, so I need my paper or news
websites. I'm also a big coffee lover - more
of a Dunkin' gal than a Starbucks one. —
