Practices are likely to experience a temporary loss in productivity during EHR system
implementation. Seventy-four percent of respondents reported a decline in their practice’s ability to
see patients during or shortly after implementation. However, more than 70% of the respondents have
since returned to full scheduling, and 23% indicated that productivity is improving, but has not yet
returned to previous levels. Practices are more likely to return to typical productivity levels after at
least one year of operating the system.



The extent to which practices took active steps in planning for the transition to an EHR system
had a notable effect on whether the practice received incentive payments. Seventy-three percent
of respondents who agreed that their practice defined workflow before implementation indicated that
they have received incentive payments, compared to 51% of respondents whose practices did not
define workflow in the same fashion.

Research findings are based off survey responses from more than 500 ASOA members currently working in
ophthalmic practices. The majority of respondents serve in administrative or managerial roles within
ophthalmic practices, including administrators (52%) and office or practice managers (17%). Physicians
accounted for 3% of the total participants. Most respondents are between the ages of 40 and 59 (69%),
work in an urban/metro setting (66%), and represent practices that specialize in cataract surgery or
comprehensive ophthalmology (75%). Further information on both participant and practice demographics,
