MAKING A DIFFICULT JOURNEY

A LITTLE EASIER
Ellen Adams, MBA, COMT

I

t started as a typical spring.
I was flying my Piper Archer
airplane as much as possible,
being so very happy that winter
was over. I'd taken Thursday as
a vacation day and did a local
flight, thoroughly enjoying the
beautiful weather.
The next day I noticed a blur
in my right eye. Busy with meetings and relying on my outdated
technician skills, I convinced myself
it was dry eye. By Saturday I started
to worry. The blur was still there, so
I emailed one of our retina doctors,
casually asking his opinion.
The doctor suggested we meet in
the clinic the next morning-on
Sunday-to see what was going
on. I tried to pretend it wasn't a
big deal, but for the rest of the day
a nagging anxiety distracted me. I
moved through my Saturday baking, having to concentrate hard on
simple recipe instructions, trying to

pretend the doctor was just being
nice and that nothing really bad
was in store.
VERDICT
By Sunday morning a dull pounding of dread was making it difficult
to think straight. Usually fiercely
independent, this time I asked my
husband to drive me to the clinic.
It was raining when we arrived. I
let myself in and started my exam
note; it would be a good joke to
have my work-up started. But when
I checked my vision, I was startled
at just how poorly I tested on the
eye chart.
The doctor arrived shortly after,
his toddler in tow. "I'm on nanny
duty today," he said, introducing
his little red-haired girl. It was
uncharacteristically hard for me
to connect with her. My anxiety
blocked my ability to act normally;
a toddler picks up on odd behav-

iors and shies away. Luckily, my
husband is good with kids and
entertained her in the exam room
as the doctor looked at my eyes.
The verdict: I had vitreomacular traction. A bubble of fluid
sat smack in the middle of my
macula. I started to panic. In as
lighthearted a voice as I could
manage, I asked my husband to
pay attention, saying, "There will
be a quiz later."
And suddenly I didn't hear
anything the doctor told me about
my prognosis or treatment options.
My thoughts became a repetitive,
obsessive loop: I'll never fly again.
I'll never be able to take a month to
fly across the country. I'll never be a
flight instructor. I'll never fly again.
Oh no, oh no, oh no.
On the ride home, rain lashing
the windshield, my husband tried
to explain what the doctor had said.
In that moment, in addition to
