RECRUITING STRATEGIES FOR OPHTHALMOLOGY-
WHERE TO SEARCH FOR NEW PHYSICIANS

et's face it: Recruiting an ophthalmologist can be challenging, and it does not appear it
is going to get any easier in
the coming years. With an
increased number of patients
turning 65, studies show that
the need for ophthalmologists will
increase 19% from 2013 to 2025.
Combine this with the number
of ophthalmologists entering and
exiting the industry, and ophthalmology's projected physician deficit
is approximately 6,000 by 2025.1
How then do you find quality
candidates and alert them about
your opportunity? How do you
inform ophthalmology residents
and subspecialty fellows that your
practice is a great place to work?
You'll want to develop a longterm recruitment strategy that
uses multiple resources to locate
new ophthalmologists. Here are
several effective ways I have found
to search for a new physician
who might be interested in your
opportunity.
WORD OF MOUTH
Building on personal relationships
is one of the most effective forms of
physician recruiting. Locating the
right candidate can often be linked
with "who you know." Use your
connections to
* Notify all ophthalmic vendors
and reps that you are looking for
a physician. I found one of my
finest physicians through a drug
rep who helped connect us.

* Have your physicians reach out to
their contacts and friends to share
that your practice is recruiting.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Most academic programs allow you
to post an open position to their
career centers. In many instances,
these posts are free. Remember:
* To post, you typically must contact them via email.
* Some programs are slow to
respond and need consistent
follow-up.
* Career centers are available to current medical students and alumni.
* If one of your physicians has a
connection with an academic
program, have him/her reach out
to help facilitate your recruitment efforts.
JOB BOARDS
Post your opening with ASCRS and
AAO, as some physicians are not
members of both societies. With a
paid post on AAO's career center,
you can also actively review the
CVs of searching physicians. You
may also want to consider posting
on a healthcare career center site
such as HealtheCareers.com or
engage your professional online
network using LinkedIn.
PRINT ADS
If recruiting a new doctor to your
area is challenging, you may have
success with print advertisements in
trade journals such as Ophthalmology
Management and EyeWorld.

LOCAL PHYSICIAN CHAPTERS
OR BOARDS
If your state or region has an
ophthalmology association, notify
it that you are looking for a doctor.
Some of these societies have websites, and they may allow you to
post for a nominal fee.

With the expected shortage of
ophthalmologists, practices will
want to start the process early
when recruiting a new doctor to
join the team. Depending on location and needs, a practice might
search for years before finding a
physician who has the right surgical skills, fits the company's work
culture, and whose family wants to
live in the area. Having a formal
recruitment strategy in place will
give you a better chance of finding
a suitable candidate who meets
