The hopes and dreams for our community's
future walked into our clinic on the first
day our students began their clinical
rotations last month.
and created a proposal to establish
a technician training program
at the college. We forged ahead
creating proposed course curriculum plans and program benchmarks and objectives.
Our proposal got the attention
of the Health Sciences Department
at the college. We were able to get
a face-to-face meeting with the
Dean of Health Sciences and the
Vice President of the school. They
seemed very interested in what
Wheaton Eye Clinic was proposing.
Then, we waited patiently.
THE APPROVAL PROCESS
The proposal was reviewed by
several internal committees at
the college. The college wanted
to involve other practices in the
area. I hadn't thought of that! Our
competitors are in fact part of our
community and we all know that
the world of ophthalmology is a
small one. We have to all sit at the
table together and lean in on the
big picture. Each local practice
is facing the same challenges and
would provide insight and perspective into this program.
Ultimately, the proposal was
sent to the state community college
board for approval. All of these
processes took time. Sometimes
several months passed by with no
updates. At times, it seemed evident
that this program would never
come to fruition despite reassurances that everything takes time.

Finally, there was movement.
There were several conference calls
and meetings among the local
practices that would be hosting
students for clinical rotations and
introductions to the newly appointed Eye Care Assistant Program
Coordinator. Things finally seemed
to be progressing.
This past winter, I was reading
the Chicago Tribune and saw an
article on this new program called
"Eye Care Assistant" that would
be offered at our local community
college. I was audibly elated and
I am quite sure that I alarmed a
few people with my reaction. The
college was recruiting prospective
students! They were pushing for a
fall 2017 start.
LAUNCHED!
I volunteered to serve on the
advisory board for the program in
order to provide insight into what
employers are looking for in regards
to potential hires. This would help
us to keep up with the changing
demands in healthcare. We would
get to provide insight on course
content and necessary skills.
Then we offered to host students
as a clinical site along with other clinics in the area. By hosting
students for clinical rotations, we
would get great insight into their
potential and see how they interact
with our patients. These students
will receive hands-on training for
each skill that helps them develop

into robust ophthalmic assistants
and technicians.
We also have offered some use
of our equipment and facility for
lectures and lab time. The college
doesn't have a visual field machine
or exam lanes!
OUR RECOMMENDATIONS
It is now more than three years
since we approached the community college. The road has been long
and arduous. Yet since recruiting
quality staff is such a challenge, my
biggest recommendation to all of
you who are looking for such staff
is to open your doors to these kinds
of students. Bring them in and
show them the culture and wonderful world of ophthalmology!
