a part of what's happening in the practice." Smith looks
to the military maxim: What do I know, who needs to
know that, and have I told them? He schedules regular
meetings with his director team, with practice management, and twice a year with shareholders. "I always try
to push out as much information as possible, and then
verify that people below you are pushing that out to
their people," he said.
Tracking your data regularly, setting goals, planning
and engaging with staff, communicating and leading
the mindset toward growth - these integrated steps can
transform a practice, no matter its size. Maller says,
"When all of those things happen, our ability to be
successful increases exponentially." AE

Launched in 2017, ASOAnalytics was built specifically for ophthalmic administrators and gives ASOA
members access to benchmarking and comparative practice data. The program helps practices with
informed planning and evaluation for deliberate and prepared growth.
Data generated through ASOAnalytics helps answer questions such as the following:
* Are we paying competitive wages?
* How does hiring additional doctors, techs, or support staff impact our bottom line?
* What is the average pay for a COA in my area?
* How many patient visits should I expect from a full-time, comprehensive ophthalmologist?
* What revenue will a full-time doctor of any specialty be expected to produce in a year?
* What is the average number of full-time technicians per doctor?
The program segments by practice size or number of providers, in recognition that a practice with
one or two doctors is quite different from a 10- to 15-doctor practice. Andrew Maller of BSM Consulting, which helped develop the program, describes the staff productivity survey: "It breaks down key
benchmarks and metrics by staffing departments...your front desk staff, your technicians, your billing
staff. That alone gives you objective data points to compare yourself against." Being able to make such
comparisons is crucial, he says.
The system is designed to be easy to use and inexpensive, and includes education around interpreting
the data. Two of the surveys, Practice Demographics and Provider Productivity, are available to ASOA
members at no charge. Access the service and complete information at www.ASOAnalytics.com.
