HOW WE CAN SUCCESSFULLY LEAD

A

s incoming ASOA President, I recognize the
leadership challenges
all of us practice leaders
face. What leadership
principles will help us
successfully lead?
A friend in the Marines shared
with me three key leadership
traits she's learned. I believe we
can excel by developing these
leadership standards:
1. Know yourself; seek
improvement. Recognize
your weaknesses, utilize your
strengths. Improve through
ongoing education, training, and networking. These resources are at
your fingertips: Attend ASOA annual meetings. Access resources on
the ASOA website. Network on ASOA EyeMail.
2. Be technically and tactically proficient. Before you lead you
must know the job. Respect is the reward of the administrator who
demonstrates competence.
3. Know your team. What drives each individual? What technical and
personal development training is needed to help them succeed in
their roles? Let them pursue professional development. Demonstrate
your trust by delegating duties. Recognize their successes.
Leaders must also be coaches! As James M. Kouzes and Barry Z.
Posner write in The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, leaders must
model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable
others to act, and encourage the heart.
You'll find all of this and more to improve your leadership skills by
belonging to ASOA and taking advantage of ASOA learning resources!
