et's face it, administrators
and managers all have a little
control freak in them. So, I
admit I was intrigued by author Dan Thurmon's concept
of embracing uncertainty,
which has never been my
favorite thing.
The premise of this book is
actually about juggling priorities and letting go of the idea of
a "perfect balance" in life. The
theory is that work and life will
never be in perfect balance, so we
should embrace that truth rather
than mourn our inability to
achieve the unachievable.
Thurmon is an experienced
juggler. He bases his life balance
principles on "juggling and tossing" the five main spheres: work,
relationships, spirit, interests, and
health. While explaining the theory
of these areas of life we juggle, he
also discusses the meaning and
intertwining of them.
I've really enjoyed this book
and the perspective it presented. Many of the theories gave
me pause for introspection.
Any opportunity to review your
course, re-evaluate your purpose,
and rally your resources is always
valuable. Being flexible enough
to change your course will enable
you to look back on this time in
your life and the decisions you
are making now and find encouragement in how you handled
this challenge.
I really liked a lot of the principles in this book. While I cannot
envision "embracing uncertainty,"

I can certainly learn a thing or two
about balance and continuing to go
with the flow. AE
