PREPARING FOR THE COE EXAM
KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE
Carole L. Dumas, MBA, COE

F

our years ago when I took the
COE exam, I was unsure that
I could meet the demands of
such a prestigious credential.
I had received my MBA a
few years before, which was a
personal triumph and aided
me as an administrator, but I wanted something more to demonstrate
my commitment to this profession.
Having been in ophthalmology
for 13 years at the time, I wanted
to prove my dedication to this industry by fulfilling the certification
requirements and passing this test.
TREPIDATION
As I walked into the examination
room, my mind flashed back to
taking the SAT exam. Two people
to a desk, a proctor, number-two
pencils, a time frame, and that pressure of matching your knowledge to
A, B, C, or D.
At the time, I was assured that
the months I had studied, what I
knew, and my experience would
aid me. But there was something
else within me-my passion for
this industry-that gave me the
confidence to succeed.
I still remember the day that I
received the envelope with my certificate and pin inside-Certified
Ophthalmic Executive. The entire
practice heard me squeal with
excitement, delight, and achievement. The COE designation has

proven to be both rewarding and
self-gratifying, and has continued
to challenge me in my career.
PREPARATION
Preparing for the COE exam can
certainly be overwhelming, but
a copious number of tools and
resources exist that can help you
study. Below are some tips to help
you pursue the COE certification.
* Check out ASOA resources.
ASOA offers several resources
to help you prepare. From the
content outline to the practice exam (available once you
register for the exam), you
will have a firm understanding of what is expected for
this credential. I would highly
recommend using the outline in
tandem with ASOA's suggested
study resources (http://www.
asoa.org/coe/study-resources).
The COE flash cards were my
favorite aid and increased my
confidence while preparing for
the examination.

* Register for related subscriptions. When I first began
studying, I had been in management for several years. But
there were areas of ophthalmic
administration where I felt
I could use more growth. I
registered for several different
listservs, including ASOA's EyeMail, and others from AAOE,
OCR, OSHA, CMS, and my
local Department of Labor.
These were great resources on
the current regulations for
ophthalmology, healthcare, and
human resources.
* Sign up for BSM Connection,
which offers several courses and
articles in various aspects of ophthalmology. While not everything
in the examination is covered,
this resource still provides you
with an overall understanding of
the industry. In addition, it can
be used for continuing education.
* Invest in the COE review
courses. These are available
both onsite at the ASOA annual
