WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TECHNIQUE
FOR HOLDING A PRODUCTIVE STAFF MEETING?
We hold our staff
meeting in the
morning before
clinic starts and
never on a
Thursday or
Friday. We want
our employees to retain the
information we've provided, and if
we implement it into their daily
routine on a Monday, they have the
whole week to practice. Also,
they've worked hard all week, and
we want them to enjoy their
weekend without thinking about
the changes at work.
We provide breakfast and encourage suggestions for solutions. We already know what we want and how
we want it, but giving staff the ability to help execute our plans creates
involvement and commitment to
see it through and lessens rejection
of the change because it appears to
come from a fellow employee and
not management.

At a prior
employer, we had
stand-up meetings
every morning.
These lasted no
more than 15
minutes. All were
required to stand, to keep from
getting too "settled in." We assigned
a weekly timekeeper and a process
monitor. If the topic being
discussed took too much time, the
timekeeper interrupted saying "time
check," meaning to move on to the
next topic. If the conversation went
off topic, the process monitor
interjected with "process check." In
either case it was a signal to keep
the meeting on track. The conversations that were interrupted could be
carried on outside of the meeting.

Praise. I always
start out my staff
meetings talking
about what is going
well in the practice.
I also announce
any employee
accomplishments since the prior
meeting (promotions, obtaining
certification, etc.). We also give a gift
to all employees receiving certification and I always do this at a staff
meeting to make the employee feel
special and to get a congratulations
from the entire team.
Comfortable atmosphere. You
want to make your employees feel
like they can speak about issues
without any backlash. Even when
discussing problems, staying positive with the staff makes a much
more productive meeting.
Involvement. I like to get staff
involved in the meetings. Asking
different staff members to talk
briefly about something going on in
their department is a good way to
get others involved.
Treats. A nice lunch with desserts
always helps!
