well with all personalities
in the practice. If you are
stumped at how to motivate,
get along, or get someone to
respect you, find assistance.
6. The ability to see both the
big and the small picture.
Thinking strategically is
often a learned skill, and not
intuitive. It increases your
value and contribution to the
practice as a leader.
7. Excellent middle manager
selection, training, and
delegation. Complex organizations need stronger middle
managers so the practice is
not vulnerable if an administrator or key manager leaves.
Practices need management
team depth on the bench.
It's not easy to accomplish
without a plan and effort.
8. Decision-making skills. The
best administrators don't necessarily make fewer mistakes.
But they recognize the need for
mid-course corrections quickly.
9. Adaptability. If you cannot
change, your career will die
on the vine. Embrace change
management and lead the way
in your practice.
10. Effective delegation. Some
managers errantly view delegating as dumping work on
their team. In fact, you are
providing others an opportunity to grow by learning
something new, and it frees
your time for the same.
11. Customer service focus.
Administrators and practices
benefit by setting companywide performance standards
for customer service.
12. Board governance. Most administrators don't get a vote in
the boardroom, but preparing

the board well to help them
make solid decisions is a necessary skill.
13. Physician recruitment. Recruitment-and the associated competitive edge needed
to successfully hire-is a
newer phenomenon. If you
haven't recruited a doctor in
the last few years, you'll need
to get up to speed.
14. Root cause analysis. Effective
practice leaders look beyond
surface symptoms. They
find and cure the "problem behind the problem."
It's tempting to jump to a
solution before you truly
understand the problem and
possible options. Problems
are often multi-dimensional
and require a deeper
understanding to solve.
15. Leadership vs. management
skills. Leaders inspire staff.
Be the champion of projects,
practice culture, and everything leading to the practice's
goals. Your own engagement
increases staff motivation.

If you see yourself needing a tuneup in these areas, be assured that
you are not alone. Opportunities
to strengthen your skills include
* Working with a mentor or peer
role models.
* Reading business and management books, magazines, and
online resources.
* Attending ASOA annual meetings;
participating in EyeMail.
* Organizing your goals and tracking improvements.
* Getting executive performance
coaching (it can champion
your progress faster than
self-teaching).

* Taking advantage of opportunities to learn from your
insurance broker, labor attorney,
and consultants.
* Eliciting feedback from doctors,
your management team, and
your peers.
* Improving your communication
skills by videoing or voice-recording yourself.
* Holding yourself accountable for
improvement (set deadlines for
realistic achievements).
FOR THE RECORD
Your success may not be obvious
to others. Putting your value as
an administrator in writing helps
your career. Tracking your accomplishments all year pre-empts the
question, "What did I accomplish
this year?"
Submit your list of accomplishments to your managing partner in
advance of your annual review. Be
sure to include the estimated cost
savings or revenue enhancement
ideas you personally contributed
so that you establish your value in
concrete, tangible terms. AE
