The Path to Maximizing
Potential

has far too often led to careerism and
efforts to look good, rather than to first
be a leader who enables team results
and effectiveness.

Start at the beginning: what type of
leadership matters where you work? Several authors stress that before you develop high potential talent, and before you
assess potential, start with a clear understanding of what leadership matters in
your company. This is more than just a
list of competencies and skills: as Robert
Hogan and colleagues point out, the
pressure to show emergence as a leader

To really engage senior leaders, embed discussions of maximizing potential
within discussions of where the business
is today and where it is going. Note how
the leadership team featured in our
Executive Roundtable does this, and
then frames talent as a critical enabler of
strategy and future success. They know
they must preserve the legacy that made
their business what it is today and be
prepared to embrace a different future.
My experience is that investment discussions around talent development go

s I review the contributions
to this issue, I see some of my
long-held beliefs confirmed,
and several new perspectives that I am
eager to share with clients and colleagues. Below are some of the nuggets
that stand out for me.

a lot easier when that investment offers
a clear line of sight to how the business
succeeds over time.
The complexity of the enterprise
can help shape a distinctive approach to
development expectations. Mastercard
executives describe a 2+2+2+5 model for
building requisite breadth of experience. That not only sets the stage for
envisioning a wide range of naturally
occurring development experiences, it
also provides an opportunity to assess
how well people live up to their expected potential over time, across functions,
geographies, and business units.
Predicting success in a VUCA world
is different than predicting who would
succeed if the world stayed as it is today.
Integrity, competence, judgment and
vision will remain necessary expectations of all high-potentials. Those,
however, are necessary, but not sufficient. Additionally, we need a robust set
of skills, competencies, attributes that
